When I was in Tuscany last week I decided to relax and chill, not eat out all the time but savor the simple food available on the markets and shops. The Italian method of cooking is all about the ingredients. The basil there is totally different from the basil in the UK bought from supermarkets in pots to make your windowsill look pretty - taste zilch!
In my cottage garden we grow herbs in the soil and they are fabulous. I am going to try basil but no doubt the rabbits who wander in will take a liking to it.
We need to start eating seasonal foods again that is the only way to ensure you get the right taste. In Italy the only out of season food available is for the daft tourists, the locals wouldn't be seen dead buying it and as a designer I must say that in season food has a much richer colour and looks so much better on the plate - crazy but true.
