Proggy Mats Have Come a Long Way

Alir Hind Textiles proggy mats
I'm hooked, literally. I put these images in a folder on Friday and really wanted to find out how to make this sort of thing and on Saturday at the local Country Fair I spent most of the afternoon in a tent learning how to do it. How wierd is that? These are known as Proggy Mats. Made by the coal miners wives, for years, from old rags pushed into pieces of hessian. They were used as fireside rugs and bed covers. Of course they couldn't afford to use the sort of textiles we can nowadays. I intend producing some seat covers for Ghost Furniture from scraps of vintage silks and velvets in jewel colours - so watch this space. These gorgeous pieces are from Alir Hind Textiles in the UK and I see she is starting to produce some fabulous cushions/pillows from vintage fabrics and photos. She is in fact from my area. Clever isn't she?
