Just look at what is below New York. I love to see cross sections like this as they show exactly what is going on under your feet. I suppose if you fall through a hole in the ground in New York you won't go down too far before you come t some sort of obstruction.
The subway is a hell of a way down don't you think? I found this on National Geographic take a look and try the Photo Tour of the Subway it is fascinating and dirty.
