Did design get better or was something forgotten on the journey to a so called easier life? Call me old fashioned but I don't think just because something is old it doesn't work properly..
Copper Kettle or Stainless Steel Jug Kettle - I am always amazed when visiting my friend, who boils her old kettle on the Aga, it boils so quickly.
OK the keys get stuck but there's something so romantic about these big typewriters, they also wrote proper letters not emails. If my laptop tells me one more time that the word internet is not recognised I will scream. I'm using the bloody internet to type it and I'm English so I spell recognised with an S - aaaargh!!
Not that I ever ride a bike but I would rather be seen on the sit up and beg one than the foldaway thing.
Nothing can beat a real open fire, the smell and the flames are unbeatable
I have yet to fathom out my hands free telephones. Yes I can walk around with them but I still prefer to dial a number than to punch the bloody keys
Give me the old scales with weights any day. I have an aversion to digital displays, I need my glasses on to read them.
Blackboard or Whiteboard. No competition as the blackboard is one of mine.
Don't get me going on plastic carrier bags. When I was a kid a brown paper carrier bag with string handles lasted for ages.
Personal service cannot be beaten. I get information overload when shopping in a supermarket.
What is your preference?

Old!!!!
This copper pot is a thing of beauty.
Excellent post, Di!
I love good contemporary design, but
the oldies are like comfort food ... .
they always have a place on my table.
Ah Di, So many nods of agreement going on as I read through this.
I too mourn the passing of 'proper correspondence' - as for spellcheck, I agree - aaargh !!
OLD OLD OLD!! Great post Di!
Cute post Di. I guess it all boils down to looks over practicality. I would rather boil the copper kettle but I plug mine in, I would rather type a note but I am attached to my keyboard...progress or beauty - I want both! xv
I insist on writing colour, honour etc with an u. That doesn't go down well with Mr. Spellcheck either.
Designwise, I'm all for the old versions in all your pictures!
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS POST!!!
Puleeeeze take un inside YOUR head more Di=such FUN!!!
You are so much more interesting than that other stuff..ahem
But I will never give up my'puter
We are joined at the hip literally and figueratively.
Dial phone?
Lemme push some buttons please.
I LOVE both super markets and small shops.
Anyway a wonderful post!!!
Some of the new and ALL of the old!
I think a blend of the old and the new is best...and there really is nothing better than an open fire. We moved from a georgian house to a new build and the open fire is the thing I miss the most. As for the whiteboard, what about the interactive whiteboard?! Just came in as I was leaving school and really useful.
What a fabulous post Di!
Like you I have mixed feelings about old and new.
Sometimes I marvel about how things have changed, like dialing telephones and the death of phone booths for example. The ones in England were SO fabulous looking!
About bags: Paper! Yes indeed!
Bikes: Like the older one
About personal service. That will never go out of style in my book.
xox
You have me torn here Di! I love both for their functions and looks.
xoxo Noel
I love the old! Bring back the romance. I love going to my mothers to bake cookies, she has my grandma's old brass scales and cupboards full of chipped baking trays and bowls collected from the family. Somehow I don't think anyone will be treasuring my cheap plastic cookware in years to come.

I'd love one! Maybe not so practical for curling up on the sofa with the latest amazing post you've brought to us Di, but very pretty.
Love your blog as always,
Rose
I like the old things better, except for the laptop. I adore old typewriters, but to look at (and I don't have the space, alas), not to actually use. And like you, I despise plastic bags - so annoying when they're stuck together, never mind the bad-for-the-environment aspect. Sigh.
Great post!
I usually chose "old" unless air conditioning is involved.
Definitely old every time!
