I was watching a fascinating TV programme the other night which featured the canals and gardens of Xochimilco. The system, known as chinampas (floating gardens), of draining swamps and building up fields in the shallow Basin of Mexico lake beds was used to feed the population.
The "floating gardens" are anchored to the lake bottom by trees planted along the edges of the fields. It still exists and is a beautiful as ever.

Completely fascinating. And yet another thing on my list of things I must see in Mexico...
so funny to find a post about my country..xochimilco is a nice place but not as preatty as it was 4 decades ago. actually as close as late 40's there were canals from xochimilco to the main plaza of the city and the trajineras (small boats) arrived there to sell fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers just as you can see it now in bangkok. is too sad but our city has lost most of it's beauty after the 70's.
