Inspiration and How To Find It - No 3 - Being Negative

room sets black and white

First a little note from me - I have come back from my break to post the 3rd item in my Inspiration series. How nice of me. I have collected lots of great items and links during my little break and will be back on January 2nd with the first batch. Hope you all have a great New Year's Eve.

You can see enlarged versions of the images by just clicking on them.

Don’t be afraid of black and white. Handled properly it can create a stunning effect. One golden rule is to blend the two colours into each other to create a flow rather than a sharp contrast.

A great example of that is in room with the chequered floor, the sofa with it’s subtle pattern brings everything else together.

Walls don’t always need to be all black or all white, a white paper with a black feature such as the Chandelier Paper in the picture is but one example.

The embossed concrete floor tiles pictured are a great option and they look like carpet but much easier to keep clean.

Windows can be dressed in black without it being to dark and solid. The Beaded Butterfly Curtain is a prime example.

Furniture is best if it has curves as that will give a dramatic yet flowing feel.

Finally – accessories, the choice is limitless.

All furniture featured from Interior Internet

Chandelier Wallpaper from The Collection, Paris

Butterfly Beaded Curtain, Concrete Floor Tiles and Black/White Cushion from Rockett St George

Tassled Wall Lamp from Sera London

Black Birdcage from Monsoon Home

Just a note here – that recessed sofa on the black wall is a folly in someone’s kitchen – Brilliant!

Ulla Found Another One

krista raakWhenever I go over and visit Ulla's
Krista Raak makes the prettiest accessories, the sort of thing you see in the South of France but never over here in the UK.
Go to the site, there are hundreds of items to choose from.
site, which is daily by the way, I find something that makes me go WOW. Ulla featured this Estonian girl the other day and I just had to put something about her here. Thanks Ulla.

An Awful Lot of Work - Knits by Kathrens

kathrens knitwearThis knitwear designer certainly doesn't make things easy for herself. Kathrens is a British site with some lovely knitwear but I can see (due to me being an ex knitwear designer myself) just how much work must go into each piece. Lovely stuff though.

Bed Is The Place For Sinning

sin in linen beddingIf you're up for some sinning then go to this store and sin to your heart's content. Some great bedding with a twist. This is how to tart up your boudoir. Sin In Linen (love the name).

An Etsy Shop I Like

art2art colorado at etsyNot wishing to be rude but when I look around Etsy for good designers I find it a bit of a chore. There is good stuff there but there is also a lot of dross.
I found these beautiful pin cushions by Art2Art Colorado there, made from vintage scraps and bottles - beautiful.

Would You Like Your Egg Initialed

assouline france ostrich eggsAssouline is a luxury Parisian shop selling stuff you really don't need but you really want.
I want an Ostrich Egg with my initial on it, why, I don't know.
I also love those little trays with French words on them.

Another Great Perfume Bottle from Saks of 5th Ave

bleeker street bond no 9 perfume saksThis perfume bottle from Saks of 5th Avenue just screams out - NEW YORK. I love it, don't know what it smells like of course.

Farfelus Farfadets - Whatever That Means

Farfelus FarfadetsThis French company - Farfelus Farfadets -produces stunning papier mache items. I gather they are papier mache as I can't see anything on their site that tells me otherwise.
Go and take a look it's fascinating but what a strange name, anyone know what it means?

The Little Venice Cake Company

little venice cake companyOooh, I love it when I find a great cake company. Little Venice Cake Company has some amazing cakes on their site. Those little frilly ones are my all time favourites.

A Cake Slice For Those Who Can't Sing.

musical cake slice

Whenever it's someone's Birthday and out comes the cake and candles I dread the bit where you have to sing Happy Birthday. See I can't sing to save my life. Drinkstuff have the answer to my prayers with this Musical Cake Slice.

Here's the song list:
Happy Birthday
Jingle Bells
the Wedding March
and For He's a Jolly Good Fellow
Brilliant!

Kitty Fishers Finds

kitty fisher findsThis is a really great site. Kitty Fisher has a selection of beautiful new and vintage finds to choose from. Altogether very agreeable.

Lighting to Match the Dinnerware

mark braunWell why not? From Mark Braun.

Design-3000 - Just a Bit Different

design 3000Some out of the ordinary stuff here on Design-3000 a German site. I love that mouse in it's underwear, the Pig with a socket for a snout and the heavily shadowed electric fittings (both done with decals).

A Sort of Up Market eBay - Mohina

mohina buy and sell fashionYou can buy or sell fashion items for men women and kids on Mohina. There's some decent stuff and it's a bit more informal than eBay.
I like the way you actually tour the shop and click on the rails for the items you want. Great idea!

Cesar Perin Lighting

cesar perin lightingCesar Perin is Brazilian born but now based in London. He boasts about using obscure materials for his lighting range but doesn't even hint at what he has used in each piece. This candle sconce, which I have fallen in love with, looks to me as though it is either made from leather or even cardboard strips. Whatever it is it's beautiful.

Welcome to Kiki World

kiki world fashion ceramics

This has been in my blog file for a while now but the images don't seem to do it justice. However I will keep it a secret no longer.
Kiki World is Kiki van Ejik who is based in Holland.
I just love her work, it is so imaginative.
That large chest of drawers is actually ceramic
and I love her Fashion Ceramics in black and white, the pieces pictured are cups.
The glass vase is not etched it is overlayed with silver.
Lots more to see on her site.

Laduree in Monaco

laduree monaco shopThis is the Laduree shop in Monaco. Now I dislike Monaco as it is all so false, glitzy and new, not typical of the South of France at all. It is bling with a capital B but Laduree have done a beautiful job with this showroom.

Jasper Conran's Christmas Tree For The V&A

jasper conran christmas tree v&a

This Christmas Tree, designed by Jasper Conran for the V&A
boasts 1000 Waterford Crystal Drops. Quite a few more than my tree boasts. Note, it is securely behind glass.

Philippe Starck, Baccarat and Jean-Paul Hevine. Oh and Chocolate

harcourt glasses jean-paul hevineThese iconic glasses (in chocolate) are by Jean-Paul Hevine the famous Parisian artisan chocolatier.
The Harcourt glass was created in 1841 by Baccarat and Philippe Starck
reworked it in black crystal. Now Jean-Paul Hevine has had a go - delicious.

Bodo Sperlien for Lladro

bodo sperlien for lladroLladro is not really my thing. I have a few pieces we inherited which are in a cupboard somewhere.
Now Bodo Sperlein have designed a rnage for Lladro that I thoroughly approve of.

Wine To Go?

hardy's shuttles

This is a great idea a small bottle of wine with a glass as the stopper.

If you buy a small bottle of wine you usually have to drink it out of the bottle if you haven't a glass handy, which makes you look like a wino.

Look, Cashmere Bedding

cashmere sheets manrico

The ultimate in luxury bedding.
Manrico has come up with this idea. Cashmere sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers.
I put a Queen size duvet cover in the basket with a double piped trim and it was 2050 Euros. Needless to say I didn't go to the checkout.
I wonder if they will send me a sample to test?

Inspiration and How To Find It - No 2 - It's All In The Translation

inspiration di overton designers block

This picture of Tuscany in the evening sun shows the fabulous golden light that hits their landscape at the end of each sunny day. You will have seen these colours in much Italian Renaissance art and in the textiles they used.

It is no more difficult for you to translate those colours into say a bathroom colour scheme.
The Tuscan scene is predominently Gold and Dark Green with lighter shades where the sun is hitting.
Just think about a place or landscape that you really love, look at its predominant colours and off you go.
It works believe me, I've been doing it for years.

The Scandinavian Design Centre

scandinaviandesigncentre.com tove adman wallconcept pukebergIf you have never visited scandinaviandesigncenter.com then go NOW. Hold on though read this first. See that concrete candlestick well I own 4 of those as I used to sell them on wheredidyoubuythat.com and the same designer - Tove Adman - designed that amazing leather covered fold away wall mounted seat and the very smart hanging rail and hangers..
The very tall wine glass is for those who cannot be bothered to bend over to pick up their drink from the floor - by Pukeberg.
Now look at that piece of wall art that you can do in any colour you choose, a bit like a stencil but not a stencil if you know what I mean - from Wallconcept.
NOW you can go to scandinaviandesigncenter.com there's masses more.

Get Your Name Up In Tin?

tine letters seraphI've always fancied my name up in lights but have never thought of having it up in corrugated tin.
I really do like the idea and they are huge.

Take a Wine Glass and a Lampshade..........

Mike at Poaa in the Netherlands sent me an email this morning pointing me at this new product he has just added to his site. I love it!
You just take a tall wine glass and any one of three shades on it. Yeah, 3 shades and all for 15 Euros.
Have you ever tried to put a lamp on the dining table, what do you do with the cable?
I love ideas like this, simple genius.

Andrea Tung - Gives Knitting a Good Name

andrea tung fable handknits

By now most of you will have gathered I'm a lover of Alpaca yarns. Well when I did my last post on the subject I received a comment from Andrea Tung -
I hope to change the face of "craft" as its known today. The "image" is just so unappealing! - I couldn't agree more.
Andrea has a beautiful and informative blog and produces her own range of 100% Pure Baby Alpaca - Fable.
Both the sites are well designed, a joy to the eye and even have fabulous knitting patterns. Good Luck Andrea and long live Alpaca.

Erickson Beamon at Net-a-Porter

erickson beamon jewelry at net-a-porterJust last week I featured a fantastic Glam Rock Chandelier by Erickson Beamon. Vicki Beamon and Karen Erickson also do an amazing range of jewelry available at Net-a-Porter.

Atishoo - Are Handkerchiefs Back?

atishoo ladies handkerchiefsHaving just recently gotten over a bad cold and cough that lasted for around 5 weeks I was going to do a post to celebrate its demise. I put atishoo in Google to find an image to use and lo and behold I came across this site that even Vogue has been raving about.
Atishoo do lovely, packaged, ladies handkerchiefs but not only that they show alternative uses. Much to beautiful to keep hidden and far to pretty to just blow your nose on.

Resaons To Buy More Than One Bottle of Moet

moet champagneHere's a good enough reason to buy more than the one bottle of Moet Champagne. I saw these designs on the Moet site. I'm not sure if they are in production though.
Have a look at the site, there is a great video clip at the beginning.

Wine or Water?

voga italia wine bottles

Hard to tell if these bottles were meant for water or wine. I like them and they are for wine. Different angle from
Voga Italia.

An Instant Library from The Collection, Paris

It took us 15 years to build our Library (pic above) and here's an instant one from The Collection in Paris. Trouble is you can't read the books but it looks pretty convincing.

Who's Illustrating for Zara

zara fashionWhen visiting the Zara site I noticed these fantastic illustrations. I would love to know who is doing them. Any ideas?

Melt Chocolates of Notting Hill

melt chocolates notting hillThe name Melt Chocolates keeps popping up in magazines over here in the UK so I visited their site to take a look. Wow, melt in your mouth stuff here.
Melt Chocolates is based in Ledbury Road, Notting Hill, London and is on my visit list for the next time I go down there.
You can watch the chocolates being made right inside the kitchen. I think I may have to be forceably removed.

Are Candles Your Thing?

graham and green candle holdersIf you love candlelight and are looking for unusual and beautiful containers then go to Graham and Green.
The 3 designs I have chosen are only a few from their range. I love those lacey candlesticks as they will cast a fabulous pattern on the walls when the candles are lit and the Hanging Lantern is so pretty.

A Crochet Carpet and a Ghostly Lamp

bonluxatBonluxat is a mystery, there's no info on the site as to who they are or where they are based, yet they do a huge range of furniture and accessories.
I particularly like these 2 designs the Crochet Carpet is from Patricia Urquiola and Eliana Gerotto and can be produced in a solid hue or in different colours from seven available options.
The ghostly looking lamp is by Shiro Kuramata and each of his pieces are handmade therefore individual.

Harry Allen - The Reality Range

harry allen reality rangeWhen I owned wheredidyoubuythat.com I added some of the Harry Allen range to the site. I used to love opening the new designs when they arrived. None of them dissapointed. They are beautifully made and all based on items belonging to Harry's family members such as his Grandma's Candlesticks and Brother's Frame. His own hands were used as the models for his Wall Hook range. They come in different colours but my favourites are in white.
See more colours at areaware.com

Lasting Impressions

girl in red coat schindler's list

Do you hold an image in your head from the moment you see it? Is there any particular image from a movie, advert or painting that stays with you? This is mine it's the image of the little girl in the red coat from Schindler's List made in 1993, one of only four colour images in the whole film. It seems to tell the story of the holocaust in one frame.

Steven Spielberg is no doubt a genius and this sort of image with all the messages it contains only proves it.

Oh, So We All Have Topshop

topshopSo I hear Topshop is going global. No longer exclusive to the UK. This company used to renowned for being trashy but they have got their act together and are putting out some great stuff. Signing up Celia Birtwell did them no harm and I love the tie side knickers in Celia's fabric. Just look at that little jacket and collar, impressive isn't it?
They also do great vintage clothes in the larger stores.

Do You Luv Cuffs and Stuff?

cuff luvWhat a great idea. Cuffs, collars and sleeves to just add on to plain tops and boots. Cuff Luv have a brilliant collection so go now and take a look.

The Nomadic Project

The Nomadic ProjectCassidy Hughes sent me an email the other day pointing me at this site and I thank her for that.
The goal of The Nomadic Project is to connect the USA through art by experiencing as much in each state as possible in one week. In that time, Kristin Abraham an artist paints an impression based on the land or her experiences, or a combination of both. As she creates a piece in one state, she leaves it at a gallery in the next state. Alfonso Llamas a musician communicates his experiences by composing poetic melodies with an acoustic guitar and laptop.
These paintings are just a small sample they are truly stunning. If you go to their site each painting has an explanation and it's place of origin. Fabulous stuff!

Zanisa - Lovely Interior Accessories

zanisadecor8 (Holly)featured this company - Zanisa - the other day and I took a look at their site and found these great products. I love those little sachets for a babies drawers and the charcoal suede drawing set which opens to reveal eight lead pencils of varying grades, two charcoal pencils (soft and hard), a ruler, pencil sharpener, eraser and a spiral-bound pad of artist paper. Herbal Soaps, Chocolate Wafers and stacks more on their site.

Sarah Dippold Cushions/Pillows

sarah dippold pillows/These are exquisitely designed cushions or pillows. Sarah Dippold is totally new to me and from her photograph on her site she is very young.
